Is R2* in Human Brain White Matter Dependent on B0 Orientation?

چکیده
Introduction: The observation of T2* heterogeneity in white matter at high magnetic field strength [1] has invited speculation that white matter fiber orientation with respect to the main magnetic field (B0) might contribute to this contrast. A possible mechanism is the orientation dependence of microscopic field distributions in oriented structures such as the brain’s major axonal fiber bundles. Orientation dependence of T2 in peripheral nerves [2] and of dipolar splitting in spectroscopy of muscle fibers can be interpreted as evidence for this and suggest an angular dependence according to 3cos(θ)-1. A preliminary study on a non-human primate suggest this mechanism indeed affects white matter T2* in high field MRI of brain [3]. To further investigate this, we performed quantitative R2* measurements at different orientations in vivo and in fixed brain tissue samples.

White matter fiber orientation mapping based on T2* anisotropy
Introduction Recent studies have shown that T2 relaxation may be anisotropic [1-4]. This anisotropy has been attributed to the microscopic (sub-voxel level) anisotropic distribution of susceptibility perturbers. In white matter fiber bundles, these anisotropic pertubations could originate from compounds such as lipid and ferritin that may align with axons, and could generate magnetic field vari...

Introduction: At 7T the B0 field has a strong effect on MR imaging. T2* weighted gradient echo scans have revealed surprising variation in image intensity in white matter [1]. Various mechanisms have been proposed, including differences in iron concentration or myelin density in various white matter fiber bundles or variation in density and orientation of venous micro-vascular elements [1]. Tis...

R2* relaxometry of the brain is a quantitative magnetic resonance technique which is influenced by iron and myelin content across different brain regions. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common inflammatory, demyelinating disease affecting both white and grey matter regions of the CNS. Using R2*, increased iron deposition has been described in deep gray matter of MS patients. Iron accumulation mig...
متن کاملDT-MRI Tractography and its Application in Cognitive Neuroscience
Recent advancement of MRI techniques and development of new methods of image analysis have allowed us to study large neural tracts within the human brain. This is based on the principle of diffusion tensor MRI that is similar to that of diffusion-weighted imaging but takes magnitude and direction of the diffusion of water into account. Using this technique we have been able to define large neur...
